Create a Magical Ombre Effect with Cindy

Hi Gang! Cindy here and it’s my turn to show you a new project.

I’ve created a colorful Mixed Media tag using a fun technique to achieve a pretty Ombre-like effect for my background.  Let me show you how to create this for yourself!

I started out by cutting a tag out of cardboard and peeling some of the top layer off to give the tag a more vintage, worn look. Then I added a layer of black gesso and let it dry completely, using a heat gun.

I took some light paste and added a bit of Midnight Rendezvous Magical powder and Black Forest Black shaker powder. I also kept some paste in it’s original color. You can either mix the powder completely till it’s fully blended or stop when it still looks a bit odd with different shades and colors.

Create gradient by starting with the white colored paste and working your way to the middle and add colored paste starting on top of some of the white paste and add a thin layer and work your way down.  You need to make sure the different colors overlap and blend in the middle – this is what creates the ombre effect.  Without it, you will just have 2 different colored pastes on your background.

Before the paste dried I added some of the gorgeous Hollyhock Scarlet Plum embossing powder.

It changes color along with the pastes and create a gradient effect, it changes color on different backgrounds. This is definitely one of my favorite colors of Lindy’s embossing powder.

I’ve cut out a piece of honeycomb out of regular black linen card stock using a metal die and covered it with a layer of Midnight Bronze embossing powder using VersaMark watermark ink and then heat set it.

To add a bit more color I used some Magical shaker powder and Magicals. I just recently made this color fan on black paper using my starburst sprays to have some reference when working on darker backgrounds. I sprayed every color  on to the black labels and only kept the ones that showed some color. It’s exciting to see how some of the colors change in completely different ones then you would expect.

I’ve glued some sisal fiber on the tag, which is one of my favorite materials to use on Mixed Media projects and cut the embossed honeycomb paper into two uneven pieces.  Then I took a piece of burlap and pulled on the sides to loosen the strings and make it look tattered.  On top of those materials I glued two pieces of filmstrip and of-course, the lovely vintage die-cut.   To finish this project I sprinkled some gold and purple colored sequin mix on the tag.

I doubted whether or not I would attach a piece of ribbon to the tag because I didn’t really had the right color, but I decided to do so anyway and used a piece of seam binding, sprayed it with the gorgeous Violaceous Violet Moon Shadow Mist and dried it with my heat gun.

Using the Moon Shadow Spray, turned the ribbon into exactly the right color to match the tag.
