Altered Vinyl Record using Lindy’s Gang Products

Hi friends! Preeti Datta (Dutt Preety) on the Lindy’s blog today to show you step by step how to create this Altered Vinyl Record using Lindy’s Products & Mixed Media Techniques.

Altered art is a great way to recycle old objects & give them a new life. Altered Mixed Media Projects are a lot of fun to do & these make unique home decor pieces. Here, I’ve used Lindy’s gorgeous Sprays, Magicals & Embossing Powders to alter an old vinyl record.

Basic Process

Step 1: Apply Heavy Black Gesso to the old Vinyl Record

Step 2: Add the first layer of colours using Lindy’s gorgeous Sprays: Autumn Maple Crimson Shimmer Spray, Hibiscus Rose Flat Spray, Sidewalk Chalk Flat Spray & Chateau Rose Flat Spray. Spray with water to create movement and then let it dry.

Step 3: Mix Lindy’s beautiful Magicals- Gag me with a Spoon Gray & Midnight Rendezvous Magicals with modelling paste to create a DIY coloured paste.

Apply the coloured paste through a stencil onto the Vinyl Record.

Step 4: Now, sprinkle Lindy’s gorgeous Magical Shakers- Autumn Maple Crimson & Frozen Jack Frost Magical Shakers onto the record, spray with water & let it air dry. This makes the stencilled texture more visible.

Step 5: Heat emboss few chipboard pieces and metal embellishments using Lindy’s beautiful Embossing Powders- Midnight Pewter EP, Black Forest Black EP, Twilight Bronze Slate EP, Midnight Bronze EP, Angel Wings Gold EP, Purely White EP & Magic Moon Pearls EP.
Use multiple embossing powders so that each heat embossed piece is different, in the end, these subtle differences in colour create a lot of visual interest. Few of the pieces are heat embossed twice, so that once the base layer of colour is heat embossed, some areas on the piece are heat embossed with a different colour, to create interest.

See how beautifully shiny the heat embossed elements look

Step 6: Now, colour few pieces of gauze using Lindy’s sprays- Chateau Rose Flat Spray, Bodacious Blush Shimmer Spray & Hibiscus Rose Flat Spray. Spraying the gauze first with water and then the sprays, this makes it easier to colour. While the coloured gauze is wet, dabbing it with a kitchen towel can reduce the intensity of the colour & make it more subtle

Step 7: Next, layer and adhere all the elements (gauze, embossed chipboards, metal embellishments, art stones, sequins, gems & mini alphabet charms) to the Vinyl Record using Matte Gel.

This is what the composition looks like once everything is glued down.

Step 8: Now it’s time for the final finishing touches. All these steps are done in sync so that the final piece turns out balanced & harmonious. Dry brush the Vinyl Record with Heavy White Gesso to bring out all the textures & make all the elements more cohesive. Sprinkle Lindy’s beautiful Autumn Maple Crimson Magical Shaker around the main composition & spray with water to create more depth around the focal cluster, distress the edges of the record with archival inks, highlight the textures with a few metallic waxes, add a couple of word stickers & finally, create white ink splatters with watered down white gesso.

Here are some photos of the finished Altered Vinyl Record.
