Hi everyone, Jana back again on the blog and today I can’t wait to show you all how to create some rusty faux (fake) gears with the awesome Metal Maniacs Embossing Powder from Lindy’s!
To create the faux rusty gears
Let´s start with a cut file, a gear background pattern, resized and glued together four times. It´s heavy and thick like chipboard now.
Before adding some colors let´s focus on texture. For this, we can simply add some heavy gesso and/or crackle paste.
Once everything is completely dry we will bring this piece of paper to life…
Since we want to create a rusty look we will use some brown sprays for coloring. I used the following: Dark Chocolate Truffle, Milk Chocolate Brown & Cattail Copper Brown. There a few layers of each color, some heat tool drying and even some more layers.
Next, let’s create bumpy texture on the gears by using one of the Metal Maniacs: Chrome doesn´t pay EP. It´s a bright and shiny silver color, very awesome but nothing that would be called rusty, right?! Well, the secret is to add some ‘bronze age’ wax to it… this turns it from silver to the perfect rusty color and texture.
The rusty gears are ready to go now and can be used on our layout!
The background got a white gesso wash and some texture paste. Once everything was dry I added another Metal Maniac EP to it. I dabbed the embossing ink pad very slightly over the textured parts and used “Chip off the old black” on top of it.
The Moon Shadow Spray “Long John´s Silver” was sprayed over the background paper and finished with some big splatters. The rusty gears were glued to the paper. To let them stand out a bit more the paper under the gear edges were painted/colored with the pretty “Bombshell Black” Starburst Spray.
The picture were placed on some patterned papers, some curled silver wire and tons of pretty leaves and flowers…
there are also some screw heads and gears made with resin and colored with the “Bombshell Black”. You may ask why i mixed this masculine gears and colors with flowers?! Well, the picture shows my little one, in the age of a year, and I thought it would be the perfect combination between cute and rough… if that makes sense to you?!
I finished this layout with a small title “trouble maker” and black splatters. I am very happy about the outcome. What about you?
