Exploring the Magic of Vintage Steampunk Style in my Art Journal – By Priss BlaFu

In this creative journey, I’ll guide you step by step through the creation of a page in my new art journal with kraft paper (first time tackling it, so be nice with me), combining nostalgic elements with a touch of machinery and sparkle, all in an “authentic” steampunk-vintage style?

✨ Preparing the Background:

We start by creating a background on a new page, setting the stage for our journal. I start it with a simple paper collage, using a piece of paper from Nuneka’s scrapbook collection (Sempiterna).

Before we had any fun using our beloved Lindy’s, we made sure to protect the paper with a light coat of clear gesso.

✨ Creating Magical Details:

I love adding layers of texture, so this time I used a lattice stencil and Crackle Paste. This allows the Lindy’s to flow freely between the design and the cracks creating different shades and textures that will enrich the background of our page.

Adding a second layer with a text stencil and permanent ink will add interesting details to the area that does not have the crackle paste. And to make it even more striking I like to add a third layer using text, butterfly, and bee monochromatic rub-ons.

✨ Color Fun:

It’s time to play with colors! And to give it that magical touch, what better than vibrant sets of painter’s palettes. Spray, sprinkle, splash, and let the pigments dance across the page. The magic is in letting it flow and having fun!

The colors I used for the background are Bring the House Brown and Cafe Terrace Tangerine from Vinny’s View set, Gustav’s Gold Leaf from Kissing Klimt set, I sprayed a touch of shine with Gossamer Gold Moon Shadow Mist, and finally, I sprayed some light through the stencil with Frozen Jack Frost.

Steampunk Focal Points:

To create my story, I chose some steampunk elements from Scrap Boys’ Steampunk Journey collection and fussy cut them (which I don’t really enjoy doing, do you?). This is the first time I’ve used a guy as my focal point and I think he fits the best with the background I’ve created. Sometimes I work on the background according to the focal point, but other times, like now, I look for the focal point that best suits the background created.

To make our design pop, I incorporate a background die-cut painted with the vibrant Portrait Blazer Blue from Vinny’s View set, and Gustav’s Gold Leaf from Kissing Klimt set. To add more interest to the die-cut, I used embossing powders in select areas. I used Lindy’s Sparkling Sunset and Dragonfly Denim.

📜 Story in the Sentiment:

From among the elements I had prepared, I chose my favorites and had fun organizing them for a while to make the composition sense. I found joy in arranging and rearranging, seeking the perfect balance and flow.

Finally, I selected a sentiment that fit the story I wanted to tell. I’m sorry, but the one that best connected with my emotion was in Spanish and translates as: ‘Love someone who looks at you as if you were magic because you are magic.’

Come and explore this artistic journey with me. Now it’s time to watch the video tutorial. So, get ready to be inspired and dive into the steampunk world!

I hope you enjoy creating as much as I enjoyed sharing this process. Don’t forget to comment with your thoughts and share your own creations. See you on the next creative adventure!
